Should You Buy a Standing Desk Frame and Add Your Own Top?
Summary
A frame on its own makes sense when you already have a top you want to keep, need an odd size, or want a particular material. A complete desk means one product to check instead of two. Either way the finished desk has to meet the same numbers, and a top you choose yourself is only an improvement if it meets them too.
What you take on with a frame
With a frame, the top becomes your decision, and so does its fit to the frame. The frame maker's instructions set the limits: the range of top sizes the frame supports, where the mounting brackets sit, which screws to use and how long they can be, and how much the frame lifts. A screw that is too long for a thin top can come through the surface, so the instructions for that frame, and the thickness of your top, decide the screw length.
If you plan to clamp a monitor arm to the edge, the top also has to suit the clamp. The arm maker lists a range of desk thicknesses, and the material has to hold the clamp under the load of the screens.
What OSHA says about the top itself
OSHA's workstation guidance has several lines that apply to a top you pick yourself.
| Point | OSHA wording |
|---|---|
| Thickness | "The work surface should generally be no more than 2 inches thick." |
| Finish | "Desktops should have a matte finish to minimize glare. Avoid glass tops." |
| Edge | "Avoid sharp leading edges where arms contact work surfaces. Rounded or sloping surfaces are preferable." |
| Depth | "deep enough to accommodate a monitor placed at least 20 inches away from your eyes" |
The thickness line comes from OSHA's keyboard page, where the concern is room for your thighs under the desk. A thick slab of solid wood looks good but takes that room away at the lowest seated height.
What a complete desk saves you
A complete desk arrives with the top matched to the frame, the holes predrilled and the fixings included. The load rating covers a known top. What still varies between brands is the warranty, including how long it lasts and whether it treats the frame, the motor and the top differently. The warranty terms for the exact model tell you that.
