Why Do Cables Snag When a Standing Desk Moves, and How Do You Stop It?
Summary
Every time a standing desk moves, the distance between the desktop and the floor changes, so any cable that connects the two needs enough length at the top and somewhere to go at the bottom. Fix as much of the equipment as you can to the moving top so it travels as one piece. That leaves only a few cords bridging to the wall, and those are the ones to watch while you run the desk through its whole range.
How far the top really travels
OSHA's purchasing guide puts keyboard height "between 22 inches and 30 inches for seated tasks and 36 to 46.5 inches for standing tasks." Say you sit with the desk at 27 inches and stand at 42. The top moves 15 inches every time you switch, and any cord running from the desk to a wall outlet has to cover that extra 15 inches at the standing height.
Your seated preset isn't the lowest point either. Vari's instruction sheet warns that "A RESET procedure requires the desk base to fully retract (beyond any lower limit set)," so the slack has to stay clear at the frame's true minimum too.
CCOHS lists this among its sit-stand desk checks: "Make sure that any cables, electrical access, storage of materials, and general layout do not make adjusting the desk difficult."
Put the equipment on the part that moves
When the power strip, the laptop's power brick and a dock are all fixed under the top, the cables between them never change length. UPLIFT says mountable surge protectors "can attach directly to UPLIFT Desk frames, the bottom of the desktop, or placed within the cable manager." IKEA's MITTZON frame has its own place for the motor's control box: "The control box should be placed in the tray created by the frame."
What's left are the bridging cords: the power strip's own cord and perhaps an Ethernet cable. The manuals are specific about those. Vari's says "Make sure all cords are appropriate length to accommodate the change in height" and "Keep power cord away from heated surfaces and sharp edges." IKEA's says "Note! The electrical cable must have full mobility."
Running the full-range test
Do this before you tie anything down, and again whenever you add a monitor, a charger or a lamp.
1. Clear the space. IKEA's manual says "Always remove any office chair before the desk moves up/down," and UPLIFT's reset instructions say to "Clear the area beneath your desk to avoid any collisions."
2. Raise the desk to its highest position slowly, watching each bridging cord. IKEA's check at this point is that the cable "has full movement when the desk is in its highest position and has reasonable slack."
3. Lower it all the way down. Look at where the spare length ends up. It shouldn't drop into the frame, onto the desk feet or into the path of chair casters.
4. Check the monitor arm too. Its cables run over a joint and change shape as the desk moves.
What a caught cable looks like
Some electric desks stop on their own when something gets in the way. Vari's product page says "A safety sensor in the motor can detect if the desk touches a chair or any other object underneath and will immediately stop movement." IKEA describes the MITTZON's behaviour this way: "When the desk detects a sudden change in resistance, it will stop the movement and move in the reverse direction" by "approximately 30 mm-50 mm." Under the troubleshooting entry "The desk stops and reverses during operation," the first thing IKEA lists is the cable, and the instruction is short: "If the electrical cable is trapped, release it."
